A Reflection on Psalm 23
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." — Psalm 23:1 (KJV)
Six words. That's all it takes for David to paint one of the most comforting pictures in all of Scripture. The Lord is my shepherd — not a distant ruler, not an angry judge, but a shepherd. Personal. Present. Protective.
He Makes Me Lie Down
"He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters." Notice — He makes us lie down. Sometimes God has to slow us down before He can restore us. Rest isn't laziness; it's obedience. The Lord knows we need peace before we need productivity.
Through the Valley
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me." David doesn't say God removes the valley. He says God walks through it with us. The valley is real. The shadow is real. But so is His presence.
And notice — it's a shadow of death, not death itself. Shadows can frighten, but they cannot harm. They only exist because there is light nearby.
A Table in the Presence of Enemies
"Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies." God doesn't always remove the opposition. Sometimes He blesses you right in the middle of it. He sets a feast for you while those who oppose you watch. That's not arrogance — that's the confidence of being fathered by God.
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." — Psalm 23:6 (KJV)
Not "maybe." Not "hopefully." Surely. Goodness and mercy aren't just ahead of you — they're chasing you. Let that sink in. The God of the universe is pursuing you with kindness.
